Strength is card number eight in the Major Arcana, and it carries one of the most important messages in the entire tarot deck: true power does not come from force. The Strength card teaches that the most formidable kind of strength is quiet, patient, and compassionate. It is the ability to face your fears without aggression and to hold space for difficult emotions without being consumed by them.
The classic Rider-Waite-Smith image shows a woman gently closing the jaws of a lion. She does not wrestle the lion into submission — she calms it with her presence. Above her head floats the infinity symbol (also seen above The Magician), suggesting that this strength is connected to infinite, spiritual power rather than finite, physical power.
The woman wears a white robe, symbolizing purity of intention, and a garland of flowers adorns her hair. The lion represents raw, primal emotions — anger, desire, fear, and instinct. The woman's ability to tame the lion without force shows that compassion and patience are more effective than violence and domination.
When the Strength card appears upright, it tells you that you have the inner resources to handle whatever you are facing. You do not need to be louder, more aggressive, or more forceful. You need to be more patient, more compassionate, and more centered.
This card often appears during challenging emotional situations — when you are dealing with a difficult person, navigating a painful situation, or facing a fear that feels overwhelming. Strength says: you can do this. Not by fighting harder, but by staying calm, staying true to your values, and staying open.
Strength also represents the courage to be vulnerable. In a culture that often equates strength with toughness and invulnerability, this card offers a radical counter-message. The bravest thing you can do is open your heart when everything in you wants to close it.
When Strength appears reversed, you may be experiencing self-doubt, insecurity, or a loss of confidence. The inner lion is running wild — your fears and anxieties are in the driver's seat, and you feel powerless to manage them.
The reversed Strength card can also indicate that you are trying to force an outcome through sheer willpower. You are pushing, controlling, and muscling through rather than flowing with patience and grace. Sometimes the reversed card suggests that you have been so strong for so long that you are exhausted — and you need to ask for help.
In love readings, Strength suggests a relationship that is built on patience, understanding, and emotional resilience. It indicates partners who bring out the best in each other — not through grand romantic gestures, but through the daily practice of kindness, forgiveness, and genuine acceptance.
For singles, Strength suggests that the most attractive thing about you is your inner confidence and emotional maturity. Authentic strength draws people to you naturally — you do not need to perform or pursue aggressively.
In career readings, Strength indicates that your current challenges require emotional intelligence more than technical skill. Leading with empathy, staying calm under pressure, and maintaining your integrity will serve you better than any strategic maneuver.
Strength and The Chariot (card seven) represent two different kinds of power. The Chariot is external, willful, and action-oriented — it achieves through determination and drive. Strength is internal, patient, and receptive — it achieves through compassion and resilience. Both are necessary. The Chariot gets you moving; Strength keeps you going when the road gets hard.
