What is tarot?
Tarot is a system of 78 cards that has been used for self-reflection, meditation, and personal insight for over 500 years. The deck is divided into two groups: the Major Arcana (22 cards representing major life themes and archetypes) and the Minor Arcana (56 cards representing everyday situations and energies). Tarot is not a religion, a belief system, or a magic trick. It is a structured framework for examining your life from angles you might not have considered.
What deck does Enigmarc use?
We use the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the most widely recognized and studied tarot deck in the world. Created in 1909 by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, it is the foundation of modern tarot and the deck most readers learn on. Every card in our system has been interpreted across four categories (love, career, money, and general guidance) in both upright and reversed positions — 624 unique interpretations in total.
What is the Major Arcana?
The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards numbered 0 through 21, each representing a fundamental archetype or life lesson. When a Major Arcana card appears in your reading, it signals that the forces at play are significant — not a passing mood, but a defining chapter. The cards are:
0 The Fool — new beginnings, innocence, spontaneity
I The Magician — willpower, manifestation, resourcefulness
II The High Priestess — intuition, mystery, the subconscious
III The Empress — nurturing, abundance, fertility
IV The Emperor — authority, structure, stability
V The Hierophant — tradition, conformity, spiritual guidance
VI The Lovers — partnership, choices, alignment
VII The Chariot — determination, willpower, triumph
VIII Strength — inner strength, courage, patience
IX The Hermit — introspection, solitude, inner wisdom
X Wheel of Fortune — cycles, fate, turning points
XI Justice — fairness, truth, accountability
XII The Hanged Man — surrender, new perspective, pause
XIII Death — transformation, endings, renewal
XIV Temperance — balance, moderation, patience
XV The Devil — attachment, shadow self, materialism
XVI The Tower — upheaval, revelation, sudden change
XVII The Star — hope, renewal, inspiration
XVIII The Moon — illusion, fear, the subconscious
XIX The Sun — joy, success, vitality
XX Judgement — reflection, reckoning, absolution
XXI The World — completion, integration, accomplishment
What is the Minor Arcana?
The Minor Arcana consists of 56 cards divided into four suits, each associated with an element and a domain of life:
Wands (Fire) — passion, ambition, creativity, and drive. Wands cards deal with what motivates you, your projects, and your sense of purpose.
Cups (Water) — emotions, relationships, intuition, and connection. Cups cards address how you feel, who you love, and your inner emotional landscape.
Swords (Air) — thoughts, conflict, communication, and truth. Swords cards deal with your mental state, decisions, and the stories you tell yourself.
Pentacles (Earth) — material matters, work, health, and physical reality. Pentacles cards address money, career, the body, and tangible outcomes.
Each suit contains cards numbered Ace through 10, plus four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King. The numbered cards represent situations and energies, while the court cards often represent people or aspects of personality.
What does a reversed card mean?
When a card appears upside-down (reversed), its energy is altered — not negated. A reversed card can indicate blocked energy, internalized lessons, resistance, delays, or a need to approach the theme from a different angle. For example, The Sun upright represents joy and success. The Sun reversed might suggest that joy is present but you are struggling to access it, or that external success is masking an internal disconnect. Every card in Enigmarc has a distinct reversed interpretation that goes beyond simply inverting the upright meaning.
What are card synergies?
When certain cards appear together in a spread, their combined meaning can be greater than the sum of their parts. For example, The Tower and Death appearing together signal a profound, unavoidable transformation — something must be completely dismantled before it can be rebuilt. The Sun and The Star together radiate pure hope and joy — one of the most positive combinations in tarot. Enigmarc detects these synergies automatically and includes them in your spread insights.
What are the elemental relationships?
Each suit corresponds to an element, and these elements interact with each other:
Fire (Wands) and Air (Swords) are supportive — they energize and accelerate each other.
Water (Cups) and Earth (Pentacles) are supportive — they ground and nurture each other.
Fire (Wands) and Water (Cups) conflict — passion and emotion can clash.
Air (Swords) and Earth (Pentacles) conflict — thought and practicality can be at odds.
When your spread contains cards from multiple suits, Enigmarc analyzes the elemental balance and tells you whether the energies in your reading are cooperating or competing.
What is a spread?
A spread is a predefined layout of card positions, where each position represents a different aspect of your question. The position gives context to the card — the same card means something different in the "Past" position than in the "Future" position. Enigmarc offers six spreads:
Single Card (1 card) — a focused snapshot of the energy around your question.
Three Card (3 cards) — Past, Present, and Future. The most popular spread for understanding how a situation evolved and where it is heading.
Yes or No (1 card) — a direct response to a binary question, with the card's energy and orientation indicating the answer.
Relationship (5 cards) — You, Them, The Connection, The Challenge, and The Outcome. Designed for questions about any interpersonal dynamic.
Celtic Cross (10 cards) — the most comprehensive spread in tarot, covering your present situation, challenges, foundations, recent past, potential, near future, your attitude, your environment, hopes and fears, and the final outcome.
Compatibility (7 cards) — Person A, Person B, What Unites, What Divides, The Dynamic, Advice, and Potential Together. Built for comparing two people's energies.
Is tarot fortune-telling?
No. Tarot does not predict a fixed future. It reflects the energies, patterns, and possibilities present in your life at the moment of the reading. Think of it as a mirror, not a crystal ball. The cards show you what is — your choices determine what will be. All readings on Enigmarc are designed for entertainment, self-reflection, and personal growth. They are not a substitute for professional advice of any kind.
What is the Lunar Lens?
Every reading on Enigmarc includes a Lunar Lens — an additional layer of interpretation based on the current phase of the moon. The moon has been associated with intuition, emotion, and cycles for millennia. The Lunar Lens tells you the current moon phase, what it means for your reading, and how it colors the energy of the cards you drew. It is one more dimension that makes each reading feel rooted in the present moment.
