Temperance is card number 14 in the Major Arcana, appearing after the transformative endings of Death and before the shadow revelations of The Devil. It is a card of balance, patience, moderation, and the alchemical art of blending opposing elements into something greater than either could be alone. In a world that pushes toward extremes, Temperance offers the radical wisdom of the middle path.
The Rider-Waite-Smith image shows an angel standing with one foot on land and one foot in water, pouring liquid between two cups in a continuous, flowing stream. The angel wears a white robe with a triangle inscribed on the chest, and a sun-like symbol glows on the forehead. Behind the angel, a path leads through green hills toward a distant mountain range where a golden crown of light shines between two peaks.
Every element of this image speaks of integration. One foot on land, one in water — balancing the material and emotional worlds. The flowing liquid between cups represents the constant exchange between different aspects of life. The triangle on the chest symbolizes the integration of body, mind, and spirit.
When Temperance appears upright, the message is clear: balance is needed. You may be pushing too hard in one direction and neglecting another. Perhaps you are overworking and ignoring your emotional needs. Perhaps you are all passion and no planning, or all planning and no action. Temperance asks you to find the sweet spot between extremes.
This card also represents patience. Whatever you are working toward — a relationship, a career goal, a personal transformation — requires time. You cannot rush the process. Like the angel's patient, careful pouring, the best outcomes emerge from steady, unhurried effort. Temperance is the opposite of The Tower's sudden change — it is the slow, deliberate work of creating harmony.
Temperance often appears as a response to conflict or internal turmoil. When you are torn between two options, two desires, or two parts of yourself, Temperance says: you do not have to choose one or the other. The real answer lies in the integration of both.
When Temperance appears reversed, balance has been lost. You may be experiencing excess — too much work, too much indulgence, too much giving without receiving, or too much time spent in your head without grounding in practical reality. The reversed Temperance is a warning sign that your system is out of equilibrium.
The reversed card can also indicate impatience. You want results now, and the slow, patient work of Temperance feels unbearable. You might be tempted to take shortcuts or force outcomes, but Temperance reversed warns that this approach will backfire.
Sometimes reversed Temperance points to a lack of harmony in your relationships — an unwillingness to compromise, a refusal to see the other person's perspective, or a dynamic where one person is doing all the adjusting while the other refuses to bend.
In love readings, Temperance is a beautiful card. It suggests a relationship characterized by genuine compatibility, mutual respect, and the willingness to grow together. Both partners bring different qualities to the relationship and blend them into something harmonious. This is not a flashy, dramatic love — it is a sustainable, nourishing one.
For singles, Temperance suggests that patience will serve you well. The right relationship will come when you are balanced and whole within yourself. Avoid the temptation to rush into something just to fill a void.
More than almost any other card, Temperance represents a way of living — not just a momentary message. The angel's stance between land and water, the patient pouring between cups, the path toward the distant golden light — all suggest a journey of continuous, mindful integration. When Temperance appears, it is not just telling you what to do right now. It is showing you how to live.
