Wheel of Fortune: Cycles and Turning Points

Wheel of Fortune: Cycles and Turning Points

The Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune is card number 10 in the Major Arcana, sitting at the exact midpoint of The Fool's journey. It represents the cyclical nature of life — the constant turning of fortune, the rise and fall of circumstances, and the understanding that nothing stays the same forever. This is both its comfort and its challenge.

The Symbolism of the Wheel

The Rider-Waite-Smith image depicts a large wheel surrounded by four figures in the corners — a human, an eagle, a bull, and a lion, each holding an open book. These represent the four fixed signs of the zodiac (Aquarius, Scorpio, Taurus, Leo) and the four elements. On the wheel itself, a sphinx sits at the top holding a sword, the serpent Typhon descends on the left, and the jackal-headed Anubis rises on the right.

The symbols on the wheel include the Hebrew letters YHVH (the name of God), the Latin letters TARO (or ROTA, meaning wheel), and various alchemical symbols. Together, they suggest that the wheel's turning is governed by both divine will and natural law.

The Wheel of Fortune Upright

When the Wheel of Fortune appears upright, a significant change is coming — and it is generally a positive one. The wheel is turning in your favor. If you have been struggling, relief is on the way. If you have been working hard, results are about to manifest. Luck, synchronicity, and fortunate timing are all associated with this card.

But the Wheel of Fortune also carries a deeper message: these cycles are natural and inevitable. Enjoying a period of good fortune? Appreciate it fully, because the wheel will turn again. Going through a tough time? Take heart, because the wheel will turn again. This is not pessimism — it is the wisdom of impermanence.

The Wheel also represents karma — the idea that your actions create ripples that eventually circle back to you. What you put into the world returns. This card encourages you to act with integrity and generosity, knowing that these energies will find their way back.

The Wheel of Fortune Reversed

When the Wheel appears reversed, you may be experiencing a downturn in fortune. Things that were going well have hit a snag, or bad luck seems to be following you. The reversed Wheel can feel like being stuck — as if the wheel has stopped turning and you are trapped in an unfavorable position.

However, the reversed Wheel also suggests that you may be resisting a natural cycle. Perhaps you are trying to force outcomes rather than flowing with the current of change. Sometimes the reversed Wheel indicates that you need to take personal responsibility rather than attributing everything to luck or fate.

The Wheel in Different Contexts

In career readings, the Wheel of Fortune often signals an unexpected opportunity, a promotion, or a significant shift in your professional trajectory. In love readings, it can indicate a fated encounter or a turning point in an existing relationship — the moment when everything changes direction.

For personal growth, the Wheel reminds you that your current circumstances are temporary. This is liberating when you are suffering and humbling when you are thriving. The wisest response to the Wheel of Fortune is equanimity — the ability to remain centered regardless of external circumstances.

Fate Versus Free Will

The Wheel of Fortune raises the eternal question of fate versus free will. This card suggests that both are real. Certain cycles and turning points are built into the fabric of your life, but how you respond to them is entirely within your power. You cannot control the wheel's turning, but you can control who you are at every point along its circumference.
